IS IT WORTH STUDYING GOOGLE TRANSLATE SONGS?

“What exactly does it mean to study Google Translate songs?”, I hear you say. …Or maybe not, if you don’t mind me saying so. Either way, behold my latest blog.

Well… it wasn’t that long ago when I posted a tweet which evidenced that Google Translate songs have found their place on the Jimmy Fallon Show in the United States. I guess this goes to show that the understanding / awareness of the world’s population as a whole that translation is not just about replacing words with words, has improved markedly. But, speaking as a professional linguist – I am a self-employed translator, after all – to what extent could one identify the mechanics (or “reasoning”, depending on your point of view) of a machine translator? Generally speaking, what do the outputs of Google Translate say about it in terms of its approaches to translation (if it had any, because it’s all mechanical, do you know what I mean?)? At least with Google Translate songs you know what the material is to begin with! Like I said, I am a professional linguist in my own right; if anyone will research this subject, I will!

But I will put this into some kind of workable context: let’s look a bit at the subject of how grammar and syntax differ between certain individual languages. When it comes to my own knowledge about languages, apart from all my knowledge of my mother tongue (English), I know enough about German to know that verbs often go at the end of sentences. That’s just one example. I know that German has its share of verbs which, with or without prefixes, have multiple vague meanings (like “stellen”). And I know that the endings of articles, adjectives and even nouns in German depend on whether it’s nominative, accusative, genitive, or dative; you don’t get that sort of thing in every language, do you?

In the case of French, I know that French uses the present tense for sentences in the present participle and with sentences which do not use the present tense in that their structure hinges on “depuis”. But whatever could we learn about a language we know nothing about by doing a Google Translate song with it? Could even people who work for Google explain the language / linguistic understanding behind the algorithms in question? Well, I am a professional translator and, as such, a professional linguist; I hereby throw myself into this subject passionately almost like I was some kind of deranged lunatic. Are you excited?

Here I have Google Translated the song “If you were a sailboat” (Katie Melua) https://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/katiemelua/ifyouwereasailboat.html in all the languages of Google Translate, encouraging readers to look for similarities and differences (if anything). Now, maybe “similarities and differences (if anything)” does sound like a gross over-generalisation, but doesn’t individuals’ understanding and appreciation of language improve all the time? Not least because this is the basis (or at least one basis) of the development of confidence when it comes to self-expression, innit? By the way, I don’t consider this a betrayal of my industry in that I am supposedly encouraging people to address the hypothetical question of which languages just using Google Translate works best or worst with, when translation is normally just a matter of recreating a message from language A to language B.

Afrikaans
If you were a cowboy, I would drive you away
If you were a piece of wood, I would nail you to the floor
If you were a sailboat, I would go to the kiss
If you were a river, I would swim
If you were a house, I would live in you all my days
If you were a preacher, I would start changing my ways

Sometimes I believe in fate
But the chances we create
Always seems to be more true
You have given me a chance to love me
I have given a chance to love you

If I was in jail, I know you’ll jump me
If I was a phone, you would call me all day long
If I had pain, I know that you will sing my soothing songs

Sometimes I believe in fate
But the chances we create
Always seems to be more true
You have given me a chance to love me
I have given a chance to love you

If I was hungry, you would feed me
If I was in the dark, you would lead me to the light
If I was a book I know, you read me every night

If you were a cowboy, I would drive you away
If you were a piece of wood, I would nail you to the floor
If you were a sailboat, I would go to the kiss
If you were a sailboat, I would go to the kiss.

If you were a cowboy I would have traced you

If you were a sailboat I would sail to the shore
If you were a river I would swim you

They always seem to be more real
You’ve got a chance to love me
I got a chance to love you

If I was in jail, I know you’ll accept me
If I were a phone, you would call me all day
If I was in pain, I know you would sing me a calming song

If you were a carrot, I would follow you
If you were made of wood, I would have picked you up on the floor
If I were on the boat, I would be going to the beach
If you were a river, you would have swallowed you up
If I lived in my home, I lived in my lifetime
If you’re a preacher, I’ll start changing my ways

Sometimes I believe in luck

I know that if I were in prison, I would love him
If I was a phone, I’d scream all day long

It seems that he always hides the truth more
You brought me a chance to love me
I’m loving

If I was in darkness, they would have taken me to light
I know that I am reading the Bible every day as a book

I get the chance to love you

If I’m in prison I know you’ll give me a source
If I’m a telephone he wants me every day
If you are in pain I know you will sing my happy song

Sometimes I believe in fate
But the chances were created
It always seems like a few truths
It takes advantage of me
I get the chance to love you

If I’m hungry, you’ll be me
If I’m in the dark you will take me to the light
If I were a book I knew you would read me all night

If you are a wise servant, I will accompany you
If it is a tree I want to pull it to the ground
If you are a tourist ship, I will open you to the sea
If you are a tourist ship, I will open you to the sea.

Zulu
If you were a cowboy I’ll follow you
If you are part of the wood I can tread you down
If you were a train I would sail you on the shore
If you are a river I’ll swim
If you were home I would stay with you all my days
If you were a preacher I would start to change my ways

Sometimes I believe in the end
But the chance to create
Looks like it’s really true
You have taken the opportunity to love me
I have the opportunity to love you

When I’m in prison I know you’ll put me in
If I was a cellphone you could cry all day
If I’m sorry I’m going to sing some relaxing songs

Sometimes I believe in the end
But the chance to create
Looks like it’s really true
You have taken the opportunity to love me
I have the opportunity to love you

If I’m hungry you can feed me
If I was in darkness you could lead me to light
If I’m a book I know you’ll read me all night long

If you were a cowboy I’ll follow you
If you are part of the wood I can tread you down
If you were a train I would sail you on the shore
If you were a train I would sail you on the shore.

And , since I have a degree in French and German and therefore qualify as an authority in these languages (to a certain extent, anyway), here I have Google Translated the song English > French > German > English and English > German > French > English – I fully expected there to be differences; it’s all for any and all further future study by anyone, including me.

English > French > German > English
If you were a cowboy, I would hunt you
If you were a piece of wood, I would nail you to the ground
If you were a sailboat I would take you to the shore
If you were a river, I would swim you
If you were a house, I would live in you all my days
If you were a preacher, I would start changing my habits

Sometimes I believe in destiny
But the opportunities we create
It always seems to be true
You risked loving me
I took the risk of loving you

If I was in prison, I know you would throw me
If I were a phone, you would call me all day
If I’m in pain, I know you would sing reassuring songs to me

Sometimes I believe in destiny
But the opportunities we create
It always seems to be true
You risked loving me
I took the risk of loving you

If I was hungry, you would feed me
If I were in the dark, you would lead me to the light
