IF TRANSLATION SEEMS TOO EASY, IT’S PROBABLY NOT WORTH SERIOUS CONSIDERATION (BUT I WROTE THIS ANYWAY)
Well, my last blog was about the topic of in-material topical substance in translation work, and if you ask me one could be forgiven for thinking that this blog (the one you’re reading now), considering its title, isn’t really anything but a spin-off of that. However, in a way, this particular blog is about easy translation work rather than discussion of phenomena around challenging translation work, and by the same token I will mention this: there are plenty of common expressions which anyone could obtain a correct and reliable translation of in just about any language merely by running it through a machine translator and taking it at its word. I’m talking about “good morning / afternoon / evening”, “thank you”, “please” and things like that; stuff which isn’t even fully grammatical (if seldom unwelcome) most of the time.
Still, I don’t wish to talk about that as part of this blog about (supposedly) easier translation work. You see, I was encouraged to write this blog by the popular Youtube video Pen Pineapple Apple Pen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ct6BUPvE2sM , which, for future reference in this blog (you will see), goes like this:
PPAP
I have a pen, I have an apple,
Uh, apple pen!
I have a pen, I have [a] pineapple,
Uh, pineapple pen!
Apple pen, pineapple pen,
Uh, pen pineapple apple pen!
Pen pineapple apple pen
Dance time!
(the background track is just more of the same of this text)
I have a pen, I have a pen,
Uh, long pen!
I have an apple, I have [a] pineapple,
Uh, apple pineapple!
Long pen, apple pineapple
Pen pineapple apple pen
Pen pineapple apple pen
I translate this later on. That said… is it worth attempting to encourage debate about the (hypothetical) cultural elements of this song (for cultural consideration is really important in the subject of translation!)? Probably not, but that’s exactly what I intend to do here all the same, as I assert the following (hypothetical) cultural (so to speak) discussion in connection with this video: I propose two theories as to how this “work of art” (as nonsensical as it clearly is) came into existence in the first place. On the one hand, I can appreciate “pen pineapple apple pen” as a borderline tongue twister in English. On the other hand, the guy is Japanese, and while there is no conceivable relationship between the writing implement and the two fruits when this is weighed against the benchmark of the English lexical items for them, or that of general anglophone culture, maybe, just maybe, this is derived from some little-known aspect of Japanese culture (most likely in a far-fetched way)? But of course, I am only speculating.
I’ve already said that the song is nonsensical – if this guy really is a comedian, then I’m sorry, but what reason could there be to classify this work as any kind of accomplished comedy? It’s just bizarre. That said, I hope it can be understood that I am proposing theories as to what went through the creator’s mind – probably unconsciously – which would serve as the basis behind the creation of this video, even if the content of the final product were, ultimately, left to be random rather than being more specific and contributory to any fundamental message or similar, if that makes sense. Maybe he was fully expecting people to take the video and make their own edited spin-offs of it to post on the Internet (just for fun), just to see what would happen – something which has indeed happened. Look on Youtube and see for yourself. Like where every time he says “p” or the word “pen”, it speeds up or slows down or gets increasingly bass boosted. To say nothing of the one where it is edited such that he says (so to speak), “I have a cat, I have a rainbow – uh, rainbow cat!”, followed by a clip of Nyan Cat. So what does this have to do with professional translation? It’s perfectly simple: the notion that human imagination knows no bounds, has always prevailed – for it is certainly true, at least for most us (no offence) – and I’m reminded of that every time I find myself challenged in my translation work (preferring to keep quiet about it, of course).
Anyway, just as people can trust a machine translator to provide a good and authoritative translation of simple expressions like “good morning” and “thank you” in many other languages, I believe that the same applies with this song. My argument here is simple: chances are that, for any language, as in English, there are certainly no synonyms for the personal pronoun “I”, the indefinite article “a”, or for “apple”, “pineapple” or “pen”; but I wouldn’t suggest that this is completely true for, for the sake of example, “have” or “long” (for “have”: maybe “possess” or “hold”?; for “long”: maybe something like “extended” or “extensive”, or “durating”?). It’s even the same with “dance” and “time”. And I’m sure you will be quick to say “well, it depends [i.e. on the context]” there. And of course it does. For example, I am aware that a “pen” is also a name for a female swan (cob and pen).
The response of the Youtube community to the PPAP video has included some people making their own videos in which they sing it in other languages. I’m sure you can see how easy that must have been – not least because they were native speakers. Myself, as a fully-fledged linguist who translates for a living, I was confident enough that I could use Google Translate to provide a fully authoritative translation of the lyrics of this song not just in French and German, which I have a degree in, but in God knows how many languages I don’t even speak (for reasons elaborated in the last paragraph) (including some I had never even heard of)! I only included the ones I was sure of pending the right amount of consideration – please bear in mind that I didn’t translate this song into absolutely every language offered by Google Translate (sorry to disappoint). This revolves mainly around consideration of possible multiple translations of certain individual words i.e. “apple”, “pineapple”, “pen”, “dance”, time”, “long”, and what I was able to deduce about the simplest aspects of grammar in these languages – at any rate, no more than [nominative noun] + [verb in present tense] + [accusative noun], and maybe a bit of conjugation with but one verb (have) and / or one adjective (long) and / or the singular indefinite article. As eager as I was to translate the lyrics of this song into the following languages, I declined to, for reasons which are basically grounded in a kind of linguistic observation and insight which just cannot be sustained with a casual and insouciant attitude:
Arabic, Malayalam, Mongolian, Khmer, Azerbaijani, Korean, Hebrew, Macedonian, Myanmar (Burmese), Kazakh, Gujarati, Kannada, Bulgarian, Thai, Serbian, Tamil, Pashto, Nepali, Sinhala, Telugu, Ukrainian, Kyrgyz, Belarusian, Armenian, Basque, Bosnian, Catalan, Chichewa, Croatian, Czech, Haitian Creole, Hausa, Hawaiian, Hmong, Hungarian, Igbo, Kurdish (Kurmanji), Latin, Latvian, Lithuanian, Luxembourgish, Malagasy, Malay, Maltese, Maori, Norwegian, Samoan, Scots Gaelic, Shona, Sindhi, Somali, Sudanese, Swahili, Turkish, Welsh, Xhosa, Yoruba, Zulu
…while a Japanese version of the lyrics is already available in that video alongside the English one.
But for all the rest: I now provide what I claim to be an authoritative translation of the lyrics for this song in all the following languages. For I am a professional translator, and translating is what I do.
